“มหานคร” มหาวิทยาลัยเอกชนอันดับหนึ่งของประเทศไทย ที่มุ่งเน้นจัดการศึกษาด้านวิศวกรรมศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี ตั้งแต่ได้รับอนุมัติให้เปิดดำเนินการ ในปี พ.ศ. 2533 สืบเนื่องจากแนวความคิดหลัก 2 ประการ
(1) การขาดแคลนบุคลากรผู้มีความรู้ความสามารถอย่างแท้จริงด้านวิศวกรรมศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี ซึ่งมีแนวโน้มที่จะทวีความรุนแรงขึ้นในอนาคต
(2) ความต้องการที่จะผลิตบัณฑิตที่มีความรู้ความสามารถเต็มศักยภาพ เพื่อประโยชน์แก่ตนเองและประเทศชาติ โดยสั่งสมจากการศึกษาและฝึกปฏิบัติให้มีความรู้พื้นฐาน รู้เท่าทันเทคโนโลยีสมัยใหม่ มีความรู้และทักษะด้านปฏิบัติจากเครื่องมือที่ทันสมัย ในการทดลอง ทำโครงงาน และการแก้ปัญหาที่ซับซ้อนในสถานการณ์จริง

ปัจจุบัน มหาวิทยาลัยเทคโนโลยีมหานคร เปิดสอนระดับปริญญาตรี 19 แขนง ปริญญาโท 9 แขนงและ ปริญญาเอก 4 แขนง มีความร่วมมือทางวิชาการกับมหาวิทยาลัยชั้นนำทั่วโลกอีกหลากหลายสถาบัน

มหาวิทยาลัยเทคโนโลยีมหานครมุ่งพัฒนาคุณภาพการจัดการเรียนรู้ ทำการวิจัยอย่างต่อเนื่อง และผลิตบัณฑิตที่มีความเชี่ยวชาญเชิงทักษะ โดยมหาวิทยาลัยจะต้องพึ่งพาตนเองได้อย่างยั่งยืน
เพื่อให้การบริหารและการดำเนินงานของมหาวิทยาลัยฯเป็นไปอย่างเป็นระบบและมีทิศทางที่ชัดเจน จึงได้มีการกำหนด วิสัยทัศน์ พันธกิจ และ เป้าประสงค์ สำหรับการวางแผนยุทธศาสตร์ในระยะ 5 ปี (พ.ศ. 2568-2572) ดังต่อไปนี้
มหาวิทยาลัยเทคโนโลยีมหานครเป็นมหาวิทยาลัยเฉพาะทางด้านวิศวกรรมศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี ในการผลิตทรัพยากรบุคคล งานวิจัย และนวัตกรรม ให้เป็นที่ต้องการอย่างสูงของภาคอุตสาหกรรม
1) ผลิตทรัพยากรบุคคลที่มีความรู้และสามารถปฏิบัติได้จริง รวมทั้งมีทัศนคติและทักษะทางวิชาชีพที่ดีมีคุณลักษณะที่สอดคล้องกับความต้อง การของภาคอุตสาหกรรม
2) ส่งเสริมการสร้างสรรค์งานวิจัยและนวัตกรรมในการแก้ไขปัญหาในอุตสาหกรรม เพื่อเป็นแหล่งรายได้หลักของมหาวิทยาลัยอีกทางหนึ่ง และก่อให้เกิดการฝึกปฏิบัติงานจริงของนักศึกษาและคณาจารย์
3) ส่งเสริมการพัฒนาชุมชนให้มีความเข้มแข็งและสามารถพึ่งพาตนเองได้อย่างยั่งยืน รวมทั้งส่งเสริมการอนุรักษ์ประเพณีและวัฒนธรรมท้องถิ่น
1) เพื่อให้บัณฑิตที่จบการศึกษามีงานทำที่ดีและสร้างคุณประโยชน์ให้กับประเทศชาติ
2) เพื่อให้มหาวิทยาลัยมีความเข้มแข็งทางการเงิน
3) เพื่อให้เกิดการพัฒนาอุตสาหกรรมภายในประเทศ ให้สามารถพึ่งพาตนเองได้ และสร้างชื่อเสียงมหาวิทยาลัยสู่สากล
4) เพื่อให้ชุมชนได้ตระหนักถึงบทบาทของมหาวิทยาลัยในการพัฒนาชุมชนร่วมกับคนในชุมชน
